Oral hygiene products for children – how to encourage children to take care of their teeth?

Dziecko myje zęby szczoteczką w łazience. Jakie produkty do higieny jamy ustnej dla dzieci są najlepsze?

Brushing teeth is part of everyday life, but for many parents it can sometimes become a real battle. Your child grimaces at the sight of a toothbrush, cries while brushing, and you wonder how to make children’s oral hygiene products irresistible rather than a cause for arguments. The right tools can turn this routine into a positive experience your child will look forward to.

Why don’t children like brushing their teeth?

Children naturally fear what they don’t understand. Oral hygiene may also seem unpleasant to them - foam in their mouths, the strange taste of toothpaste, or the tickling feel of toothbrush bristles. If you don’t explain why they need to do it, they’ll see it as an unnecessary torture.

Young children want to have a say in their lives. When you make them brush their teeth without giving them any choice, they feel helpless. That’s why it’s so important to give them a sense of control, even in a simple matter like choosing the color of their toothbrush.

How to choose the right products for your child

Toothbrushes - Size Matters

A children’s toothbrush must be the right size for your little one’s mouth. The brush head should be small so it can easily reach the back teeth. The handle should be thick enough for little fingers to grip securely [1]. It’s also worth choosing an appealing color. There are many high-quality toothbrushes on the market featuring designs from your little one’s favorite cartoons.

An electric toothbrush for children can be a great alternative, especially for children over 3, as long as parents supervise them and follow the manufacturer’s instructions [2]. Gentle vibrations can be more effective than manual brushing. Electric toothbrushes also often come in attractive designs and colors!

A woman and her daughter brush their teeth with toothbrushes and look in the mirror. How can you encourage children to take care of their teeth?

A sonic-rotary toothbrush like the ZENT® SoniQ+ is a good choice. It automatically makes the right brushing movements and has a special gentle mode that’s useful when first getting started with electric toothbrushes.

Toothpaste – flavor makes all the difference

The best toothpaste for children is one your little one will actually want to use. Instead of mint, choose natural fruit flavors – for example, strawberry, watermelon, or other flavors, of course with no added sugar. Children’s toothpaste should contain fluoride, but in the right amount – 1000 ppm for children aged 3 and up [3].

We offer several effective, fruity toothpastes, both for children aged 0-3 and those aged 3-6. Be sure to also check out the ZENT® – Dental Box Kids’ Set, which includes a colorful hourglass to time brushing, toothpaste, a toothbrush, mouthwash, and flavored floss picks. It’s a ready-to-use, tried-and-tested set!

Extra accessories that make a difference

Colorful cups, small hourglasses to time brushing, flavored floss picks shaped like animals, or stickers featuring their favorite characters – all these things make children’s oral hygiene a game, not a chore.

Mobile apps featuring cartoon characters that “count” the teeth brushed and reward your child are especially effective. You can also buy a toothbrush that lights up for 2 minutes or plays a tune – it acts as a natural timer, helping your child brush for long enough.

It’s also worth considering a special “toothbrush stand” with a space just for your child. When little ones have their own corner in the bathroom, they feel important and responsible for their belongings.

Proven ways to encourage your child to brush their teeth

Make brushing fun

Create a “toothbrushing playlist” with your child’s favorite songs. Two minutes of brushing will fly by to the rhythm of their favorite tunes. You can also tell a story about “bad bacteria” that the toothbrush has to defeat – your child’s teeth will become a battlefield between good and evil.

A reward system that works

Create a brushing calendar with colorful stickers. One sticker for every brushing. After a week full of stickers, give a small reward. It’s simple and effective.

Be a role model

Children learn by imitation. Brush your teeth with your child and show them how to do it properly. When they see that you do it every day too, they’ll understand that it’s a normal part of the day.

The three most common mistakes parents make

Don’t force your child to brush their teeth – that’s the quickest way to put them off. Instead, calmly explain why children’s toothbrushing is important. Use simple words: “Teeth need to be clean to stay healthy and to keep working well for a long time, so you can eat your favorite things.”

The second mistake is brushing a child’s teeth right after they eat sweets. Acids produced by bacteria weaken the enamel – it’s better to wait 30-60 minutes or at least rinse the mouth with water first.

Don’t stop checking their brushing technique, either. Even an 8-year-old may hold the toothbrush incorrectly or miss the back of the mouth. Regular checks and gentle corrections aren’t about control, but about caring for their health.

Effective oral hygiene for children is not just about choosing the right products, but above all about taking the right approach. When you turn daily brushing into a positive experience full of fun and understanding, your child will reach for their toothbrush on their own. Remember – the hygiene habits you build in childhood will benefit your children’s health for their whole lives.

Frequently asked questions

When should you start brushing a child’s teeth?

As soon as the first tooth appears, at around 6 months of age. At first, a gauze pad dampened with water is enough; then gradually introduce a silicone toothbrush.

How often should a child brush their teeth?

At least twice a day – in the morning after breakfast and in the evening before bed. This is the foundation of effective cavity prevention.

Can a child use mouthwash?

Only from age 6, once the child has learned to spit and not swallow the liquid. Before then, a toothbrush and toothpaste are enough.

When should the first dental visit take place?

Ideally before the first birthday or within 6 months of the first tooth erupting.
