Periodontitis – what it is, how to prevent and treat it?

Zdjęcie przedstawia kobietę z otwartymi ustami, gdzie zagląda dentystka. Jak walczyć z paradontozą?

Have you noticed blood on your toothbrush while brushing your teeth? Do your gums seem to be receding, and do your teeth look longer than before? These may be the first signs of periodontitis—a condition that is one of the most common causes of tooth loss in adults. The good news? Periodontitis doesn’t have to be a sentence—if you know how to recognize it and treat it properly.

Periodontitis – what is it? Definition and how the disease works

Periodontitis is a chronic disease of the tissues surrounding the tooth—the periodontium—which leads to their gradual destruction. It starts innocuously, with gum inflammation caused by bacterial plaque. If you don’t take action, bacteria penetrate deeper, forming gum pockets—spaces between the gum and tooth where more bacteria multiply.

Over time, the infection destroys the jawbone that holds the teeth in place. The result? The teeth start to loosen and, in advanced cases, fall out. Importantly, periodontitis it doesn’t hurt at first, so we often notice it too late [1].

Symptoms of periodontitis – how can you recognize the disease in time?

Early warning signs of periodontitis

Bleeding gums is the first and most common symptom of periodontitis. If your gums bleed while brushing or eating a hard fruit, that’s a sign that something is wrong. Don’t ignore it! This is the point when you can still reverse the process.

Other early symptoms include:

  • red and swollen gums – healthy gums are light pink and firm,
  • bad breath (halitosis) – caused by the growth of anaerobic bacteria in the mouth,
  • gum sensitivity to touch or temperature.

Advanced symptoms of periodontitis

As the disease progresses, symptoms may include:

  • receding gums – the necks of the teeth become exposed, making them look longer,
  • loose teeth – the bone is destroyed, causing the teeth to lose stability,
  • pus discharge from the gum pockets,
  • changes in your bite – teeth shifting,
  • pain when chewing food [2].

If you notice any of these symptoms, make an appointment with your dentist—the sooner you start treatment, the better the chance of saving your teeth.

The most common causes of periodontitis

Plaque – the main enemy

The primary cause of inflammation associated with periodontitis is dental plaque [3] – a sticky layer of bacteria that builds up on the teeth. If you don't remove it regularly by brushing and flossing, it hardens into tartar, which can only be removed at a dental office.

Risk factors

  • smoking – weakens the gums and hinders healing,
  • diabetes – high blood sugar encourages bacterial growth,
  • poor oral hygiene – brushing only the outer surfaces of your teeth isn't enough; proper technique is also essential,
  • stress – weakens the body's immune system,
  • genetics – some people are more predisposed to periodontal disease,
  • bruxism (teeth grinding) – damages the supporting tissues.

Symptoms of gingivitis – is it the same as periodontitis?

Gingivitis (gingivitis) is the stage before periodontitis. The difference? With gingivitis, the process is reversible – if you improve your oral hygiene, your gums can recover. With periodontitis, irreversible bone damage has already occurred [4].

Symptoms of gingivitis:

  • red, swollen gums,
  • bleeding while brushing,
  • sensitivity.

The key question: what to do about bleeding gums? The answer is simple – thorough oral hygiene and plaque removal.

Periodontitis treatment – what can you do?

Professional dental treatment

  • scaling – removal of tartar using ultrasound,
  • gum pocket cleaning – a dentist uses special tools to clean bacteria and dead tissue from beneath the gums,
  • antibiotic therapy – in advanced cases,
  • surgical procedures – in the most challenging cases (tissue grafts, bone regeneration).

At-home treatment – key tools

The truth is that without a consistent home care routine, no in-office treatment will deliver lasting results. You need a comprehensive approach.

Water flosser – effective cleaning of gum pockets

ZENT® Stream+ This is a water flosser that is just as effective as traditional dental floss at removing plaque, but much easier and more pleasant to use. Why is it an important tool for preventing periodontitis?

  • Reaches periodontal pockets – a water jet at 40–110 PSI reaches places a toothbrush cannot.
  • Reduces gum bleeding – studies show significant improvement in gum health after just 2–4 weeks of regular use [5].
  • 360° rotation technology – for even cleaning throughout the mouth.
  • Three cleaning modes – gentle (for sensitive gums), normal, and pulsating (intensive cleaning).

If you have bleeding gums, start with gentle mode. After a few days, you can switch to normal mode.

Toothbrush with the Modified Bass method built in

ZENT® SoniQ+ is the first toothbrush in Poland to combine sonic technology (31,000 vibrations/min) with 60° oscillation, automatically performing movements based on the Modified Bass method – considered by dentists to be one of the most effective brushing techniques.

Why does this help with periodontitis?

  • Precise cleaning along the gumline – where the most bacteria accumulate.
  • Gentle on sensitive gums – Gentle mode does not irritate and effectively removes plaque.
  • Removes bacterial biofilm even from below the gumline.
  • 5 cleaning modes – tailored to different needs (from gentle to Super Clean).

The Modified Bass method involves holding the toothbrush at a 45° angle to the gumline and gently sweeping bacteria from the gums toward the teeth. ZENT® SoniQ+ automatically performs this motion thanks to its unique Dual-Motion technology.

Toothbrush sterility

A humid bathroom environment is a paradise for bacteria. If you have periodontitis, the last thing you need is to reintroduce germs into your mouth.

ZENT® Uveo Duo is an intelligent UV sterilizer that eliminates 99.9% of bacteria from your toothbrush. Automatic disinfection every 3 hours and the "Health Wind" drying system keep your toothbrush clean and dry at all times.

What to do about bleeding gums? A step-by-step action plan

  1. Make a dentist appointment – professional tartar removal is essential.
  2. Buy a water flosser – use it every evening before brushing your teeth.
  3. Switch toothbrushes – switch to a sonic toothbrush with a gentle cleaning function.
  4. Brush your teeth twice a day for 2 minutes each, focusing on the gumline.
  5. Stop smoking - this increases your chances of recovery.
  6. Check your gum health regularly - dental visits every 6 months.

Periodontitis is a serious disease, but you can control it. The key is early recognition of symptoms (bleeding gums, receding gums) and an immediate response. Professional treatment from a dentist and consistent home hygiene (a water flosser, a good toothbrush, sterility) can help you keep your teeth into old age. Don't wait until it's too late - take action today.

FAQ - frequently asked questions

Can periodontitis be cured?

Unfortunately, damaged bone does not grow back on its own. However, you can stop the disease from progressing and prevent further damage with proper hygiene and regular dental visits.

How often should I use a water flosser for periodontitis?

Daily use is recommended, preferably in the evening before brushing your teeth. Adjust the exact frequency and intensity to your condition - consult your dentist.

What if my gums bleed despite regular hygiene?

Bleeding should decrease after 7–10 days of consistently using a water flosser and a suitable toothbrush. If it does not stop, be sure to see a dentist - pocket cleaning may be necessary.

Does periodontitis hurt?

Not at first. It is a disease that develops painlessly. Pain only appears in advanced stages, when the infection is already serious.
